What to pack for a cruise?

Updated: Oct 4, 2018

If you are going on a cruise for the first time, then it is natural that you are confused about how and what to pack. Most of the things you pack will depend on where your cruise is taking you. Are you cruising through the Mediterranean? or are you sailing to Alaska?

Clothes

Most ships will have a dress code for the night time, for example, they might ask for an elegant dress for a party. So you can pack a cocktail or an evening dress , a tuxedo or a nice blazer for the occasion. The days will most often be casual. Pack shorts, t shirts, jeans and polo necks for the days ashore. If you are going to dock in islands, where there might be chances of rain, pack weather appropriate waterproof jackets, umbrellas or raincoats. Don't forget bathing suits/swim shorts for the ship's swimming pools and swimsuits/bikinis for those sunny days on the beach.

Shoes

Sneakers/trainers are the best option when you are ashore for the day. They will keep your feet comfortable for those long walks when you are sightseeing and wandering about. Sandals are an option when you have to dress up, and keep slippers/flip flops for beach days or lounging in the pool area.

Accessories

Keep sunglasses, scarves and tissues in a handy bag like a backpack. Most cruise ships offer toiletries like soaps, shampoos and lotions, but if you are choosy, bring your own travel sized ones. Also scarves, and hats make good souvenirs to purchase on the trip, so don't bring too many.

Other items

Cameras, adapters, and razors are essential that you cannot forget to pack. Also books and eBook readers if you want to just relax and read. Most large cruise ships offer a lot of fun activities and games for kids, but if your kids are very particular, you can always pack their favorite toy, coloring book etc.

Cruise ships often have small shops and boutiques inside, so you can shop in them if you have forgotten anything, or just buy stuff when the ship docks at a good port.

Don't panic, if you suddenly realized that you didn't bring something important. Cruise ships often have small shops and boutiques inside, so you can shop in them if you have forgotten anything, or just buy stuff when the ship docks at a good port. So enjoy your cruise and don't forget to have fun, because going on a cruise is an experience like no other.
